Why is it called a “nude” beach?

By: Christopher Jeremiah

By Christopher Jeremiah

It was Halloween 2018.  My friend, Beck, took me to enjoy my first nude beach experience in Pismo, California.  Needless to say, it was a disappointing one.  Nude generally means “no clothes, right?”  Guess not.  I thought I would finally be at a place that I could feel open and free.

Getting down to the beach from the street atop is quite the challenge.  Sometimes a rope is necessary after a steep incline, in order to get to the beach. I noticed at the end of the rope that out of five people in sight, four of them had clothes on.  So far this is not what I expected. From what I can see so far, there are more clothed bodies than nude ones.  After perusing the beach, I spotted a couple.  The man was lying on his back while the woman was giving him a ‘hand’ if you know what I mean.  I’m still pretty sure that’s still forbidden in public, even at a nude beach.

Arriving at the spot Beck was looking for, we decided we would lie down and soak up some sun. I noticed another couple about ten yards away lying on their stomachs.  The man closest to me began to get up, and I saw that both were men. Because one of them had long hair, I had mistaken him for a woman, but it was becoming clear that there were NO women at this beach.  At least not that I could tell. Then, to add to my curiosity about everything, the man that started to stand up, put his bathing suit on to go into the water.  What???? So much for my first experience so far.  Not that I’m a voyeur, but it would be more comfortable if others were partaking.

The Next day, I thought I would give the nude beach experience a second go-round.  Maybe yesterday was just a fluke, right?  I arrived earlier than the previous day.  I was one of around 10 people on the beach.  It almost looked more like a semi-private beach.  A couple of people were walking by me on a stroll.  They were clothed.  There was a couple further down the beach. A man and a woman.  He was nude.  She wasn’t.  She, too, was helping give him a ‘hand’ not so discreetly and followed it up with a mouthy finish. I am the first one to preach that nudity isn’t about sex, and it irritated me I was being proved wrong in two instances.

The beach started to get crowded, as people were filtering in small packs.  At that point, there were approximately five people of fifty that were nude, besides myself. There was one topless woman with her dog, which made me feel better about the fact that I brought my Lil chi, Mimi, with me that day. I was thinking about talking to two men walking by us and maybe ask them if they understood why this was a nude beach.  I wanted to document my experience on video, but I knew that would be frowned upon, and is usually strictly forbidden. I don’t understand why, since everyone was clothed anyway. After looking around a bit, I notice the people to the right seemed closer to the age of college kids, just there for a peek-a-boo. Only the area to the left was actually the nude beach.

Then… wait for it…… OMG…. There was finally a woman that was fully nude.  Finally, a woman on the nude beach was partaking.  The first one in two days. I honestly think I have seen more skin on a regular beach.

So, what I have concluded is this… There are no nude beaches in the USA.  While there should be three options: clothing required, clothing optional and nude.  The latter does not exist.  I declare this to be true because there are no beaches that REQUIRE a person be nude.  I understand in Europe, beaches aren’t called “nude beaches,” rather they allow one to be nude if they choose. So technically, in America, there are ‘clothing required’ and ‘clothing optional’

Trying to be as respectful as possible, I would like to give a question to ponder…

It is normally the case that men wear shorts to cover their “privates” but go topless since they have nothing to hide….

So, why is it that women go topless instead of bottomless?  There isn’t really much to show on the bottom, while a lot more to see on top.  Doesn’t it seem a bit backwards?

I welcome comments from males, females, nudes, non-nudes, aliens, etc…….

Naturist Thought #100 – Dawn

By: Marc

Here we are, the 100th naturist thought. When I started, I planned 100, so even though I had a pause, I wanted to finish those 100 thoughts. I love dawns, probably more than sunsets. Dawns are more quiet and colors are sometimes more intense that sunsets’.

Dawns represent the promise of a new day, of new experiences. Walking outside, watching the sun rise is always a wonderful experience, naked, the cold of the night adds a fascinating layer. As shared previously, cold and nudity are not opposed. When exposing your body to cooler temperature, you re-teach your body to adapt, something it long forgot in the comfort of our society.

Walking on a beach or on the edge of a forest, at dawn, listening to the nature that wakes up is a wonderful experience. This new year is another kind of dawn, will you embrace naturism more? will you make more naturist friends and spend more time naked? Will you “evangelize” naturism and its benefits around you? Will you be a naturist role model? I will because I want naturism to be seen and perceived as the normal lifestyle it is. Let’s all normalise naturism!

Naturist Thought #99 – Practice

By: Marc

Practice makes perfection. You may have heard about the 10,000-hour rule introduced by Malcom Gladwell in his famous book Outliers. So goes naturism I think. The more time you spend naked in naturist setting, the more nudity becomes natural and you’ll soon become an expert naturist.

If you grasp every opportunity to get naked, be it at the beach, on a hike or at home with friends, you’ll soon be very comfortable in your own skin. Sometimes, at the beginning of your naturist journey, you may feel awkward being naked, particularly in a mixed audience, with clothed and other naked people.

But the more you practice, the more nudity becomes normal and you can get naked more frequently. You’ll soon discover there are plenty opportunities when you can be naked, more than you can imagine. Keep practicing!

Naturist Thought #98 – Entitlement

By: Marc

People seem more and more entitled these days, starting with kids. I do not know whether it’s true or not, or just an effect of time, however my feeling is we are not entitled to many thing but keep fighting. Social, non sexual nudity should be a right, most naturists agree and naturist federations and associations fight for this right to be enforced.

But is nudity an entitlement? On one side, I really think it should, as it is simply giving back humanity without the artifice of clothing. On another one, being nude should not be a privilege or a benefit, which an entitlement is, but the simple expression of our humanity, in its simplest form.

So, with some thinking, I come to realize that being naked in nature, at home or in naturist places is not an entitlement, it’s a choice that we have in most countries and that we should enforce through laws. However, as, for most people, nudity equals sex, we need to constantly educate about naturism and its many benefits, this is the only way the right to be naked will prevail. Not as an entitlement, but our simple basic right.

Naturist Thought #97 – Longevity

By: Marc

Many people have been trying to increase human life. Of course, we all would like to live as long as possible in good health. In an article published in Psychology Today and entitled The Naked Truth About Longevity, Prof. Kravitz, from the University of New Mexico reveals the secret of longevity: minimizing stress, maintaining physical activity, keeping your brain active, socializing, and laughing more.

IF you’ve ever spent some time in a naturist setting, all this can be applied and even magnified. Spending time in nature is a well known way to reduce stress (read this article from the American Heart Association), spending time naked in nature adds another level of stress reduction, IMHO.

Naturism is inherently a social activity and many clubs organize activities both for the body and the mind to keep fit and alert. So can naturism be a good way to increase longevity? I do believe so. Naturism knows no age, no gender, no religion, no sexual orientation and no color. What if it could lead to a longer and happier life?

Naturist Thought #96 – Heaven

By: Marc

What is heaven for a naturist? A place where he or she can be nude all day long with like-minded individuals. Most naturist places look like heaven when the weather allows to get and stay naked.

Hell on the other side is a place where you could be naked but need to be clothed, like a textile beach where being nude will lead you to jail. Being naked is so comfortable that it’s always a mystery to me that people still want to wear clothes when they could be heavenly naked.

So heaven on earth is definitely a naked heaven, and hopefully if there’s an after life heaven, it has to be naked too. In the meantime, life’s better when lived as much nude as possible, whenever and wherever possible.

Naturist Thought #95 – Escape

By: Marc

There are many places and mindsets to escape: perfect body, conformism and of course, clothing. Naturism allows to escape all three and find a newly found freedom. Naturism is pure freedom for the body and the mind. It allows naturists to escape the tyranny of the perfect body, the shame of “imperfection” and the conformism of clothes wearing society.

Naturism is liberating! This sentence is often heard and totally true. It’s liberating for the body and the mind. If you have not tried naturism and social nudity, I encourage you to book a day in your nearest naturist club and experience the freedom. You will have a unique opportunity to escape the clothed world and reach the free one!

Escaping the clothed world may seem daunting, but it’s easy: just drop your clothes and start living clothes free. With the internet, it has never been easier to find like-minded people and join them Don’t wait, just do it, now!

Naturist Thought #94 – Glow

By: Marc

If you spend a day in the sun without sunscreen, there are chances you will have a red uncomfortable glow, not mentioning the risks associated with such a sunburn. On the opposite, if you have a won the naked run or a beauty pageant, you will glow with pride.

I like those words that can carry multiple meaning and depending on the situation will be seen as positive or negative. Glow is not exception. Although it carries the idea, as a noun or a verb, of a reddish shining, it can be applied to many different situations and persons.

Naked in nature, naturists always glow with pleasure, don’t they? I do for sure! See, another usage. The love of the words and their meaning is probably one of the reasons I write this blog. Being naked and enjoying social nudity fill me with a warm glow.

Naturist Thought #93 – Ecstasy

By: Marc

No, I’m not talking about the drug (MDMA) but about the sensation, the state of sudden, intense feeling. The one you experience when you undress after a long time fully clothed. This extraordinary sensation of freedom, a true ecstasy.

For many nudists, me included, being naked outside, in nature, at the beach, with friends, is a real ecstasy. Nudism is my drug. Like any drugs, it’s highly addictive. However, it costs nothing and does not have any side effects, but getting an overall tan and being free of social clothing conventions.

Nudity is our natural state. One that we have generally been brainwashed to forget. It’s not surprising that when we re-code our brain to accept nudity in our lives, we discover how good it is, how ecstatic we are when naked. Reclaim your right to ecstasy, be a nudist!
