Smoke-Free Free Beaches

Submitted by Gerald Ganglbauer on Fri, 09/03/2007 - 12:19

These days, not many naturists seem to smoke, or do smoke on our free beaches; and those who do light up are usually pretty good in bringing their pocket ashtrays and in taking their cigarette butts back to a bin to dispose of properly, considering the fragile marine environment.

However, we know about Manly's Smoke Free Zones and that "Council’s initial Council resolution regarding Smoke Free Zones was taken on 17 May 2004 Manly Council, at its Ordinary Council Meeting, where it was resolved to ban smoking on: [amongst other areas] Manly's ocean and harbour beaches."

Some might have seen the Smoke Free Zone Campaign posters of "Cleaner. Healthier. Happier" and "These are the only butts we want on our beaches".

How would we feel about a voluntary non-smoking policy on our free beaches? Although we see hardly any people who consider free beaches a place to leave behind their garbage, it would also be nice in favour of those who are bothered by second hand smoke. And it's healthier anyway!

Shall we lead the way and give it a go?

Little CongWong Beach

Submitted by Krystyna (not verified) on Sun, 21/02/2010 - 21:37.

My husband and I went to the Little Cong Wong Beach today (21/02/10) and to our dismay the beach was raided by five (5) plain clothed police twice trying to ban nude bathing. It makes one wonder why we have to waste resources of our police force to ban nude bathing on the secluded National Park beach, which traditionally has been an “optional” beach since 1959. Let’s finish that nonsense and register the beach as a nudist beach. One can be sure us naturists will tolerate other users wearing swimming wear.

Mosman NSW also goes smoke-free

Sydney suburb to go 'smoke-free'
By 7News

The Sydney district of Mosman is to become Australia's first smoke-free suburb after banning cigarettes from all its public areas.

Councillors this week voted unanimously to prohibit smoking in all council-contolled sites, including car parks and bus shelters.

The council had already barred smokers from beaches, outdoor cafes, sports fields and playgrounds.

Residents are being encouraged to help enforce the law by reporting those who break the rule.

Offenders caught smoking in out-of-bounds areas could face a $110 fine.

"I'd be very proud if we were leaders in this field and hope to encourage other councils to join us," said Mosman's Mayor Denise Wilton.

"We're not a police state and we haven't fined anyone yet," she added.

The Cancer Council has welcomed the smoking ban, saying evidence shows the more bans are in place the less people are likely to smoke.

But some local businesses are unhappy, saying the earlier ban on smoking at cafes has already hurt trade.

Dear Freebeach Forum,

Many thanks for your support of Council's Smoke Free Zones campaign and for considering a voluntary smoke free policy on the free beaches.

Any extension of outdoor smoke free spaces is a step forward for our health and our environment. Smokers and non-smokers alike all dislike cigarette butts in the sand and water on our beautiful beaches and any reduction in exposure to cigarette smoke is of benefit to all.

Thanks for your email.

Yours sincerely,

Joanne Bramma
