Choosing a Portable Toilet

Let's talk about the most basic amenity of providing restrooms. Now in some places where constructions of restrooms are difficult and take too much time, it is best to opt for a portable toilet. You will find them on construction sites, mining areas and even outdoor events!

Portable toilets look like phone booths and can fit one person at a time. You will find that these have a tank that contains a disinfectant and has its own unique system of working. They are designed to provide ventilation and also have urinals and toilet seats. The doors of a these toilets can be locked for added privacy. There are two basic types of portable toilets. The first one is a Tardis or a chemical toilet and the other is a sewer connect portable toilet. A tardis is an efficient, stand alone structure that comes attached with a disposal system that re- circulates the waste. The waste is then removed externally with a pump. They are suitable for small events where the number of people as less. The sewer connect portable toilet are bigger than chemical toilets to begin with. You will find a lot more additions in this toilet like a towel rail, sink, toilet roll holders and much more. They can be mounted on trailers and are available in single and multiple units, ranging up to ten cubicles. Like the name suggest, some of these toilets have to be connected to the main sewer system while some have their very own re-circulating sewage system.

While choosing one, make sure you consider the location of where the facility is needed. If it is a remote factory location, choose a very sturdy one, one that can be transported with ease. Make sure you choose a portable toilet that is sturdy and that can brave strong winds and rains; you really don't want your toilet flying away! Make sure you consider the number of people at the on site while choosing a portable toilet. It is advisable to have a separate loo for the men and women; it's more hygienic that way. Make sure you choose one that can't break or crack easily and one with a good waste disposable system. Always make sure there are enough air vents for ventilation to keep the air fresh and clean.

If your event is outdoor/out of town, an environmentally friendly alternative to chemically treated portable toilets, where the waste still has to be dealt with, is to construct a wooden shelter with in-built seat (you can even fix a traditional toilet seat). Here's one of our early models.

You then position the shelter over a pre-dug hole in the ground. Ideally the hole should be at least a meter deep and at least 50 meters away from any ground water sources. Leave a lidded dustbin outside containing leaves or sawdust and a small trowel. Make sure you supply biodegradable toilet roll (it normally is). After use, one or two trowels of organic matter from the dustbin should be sprinkled down the hole. That's it!

Ours was in daily use by up to 7 people and remained odour free for about 6 Months after which we filled it in and moved the structure to a new location.
